Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος [Eleftherios Venizelos]Registered: Oct 8 1881 - Crete, Greece
Eleftherios Venizelos was an eminent Greek statesman who served as Prime Minister eight times between 1910 and 1933. Born in 1864 in Crete, at a time when the island was still under Ottoman rule, he earned a law degree from the University of Athens before rising to become the founding force of the modern Greek state. He led the nation through the Balkan Wars and World War I, successfully doubling Greece's territory and population through military and diplomatic achievement. Though his extensive reforms modernized the state, his conflict with the monarchy over wartime policy caused a deep political divide known as the National Schism. Today he is widely considered a national hero, with Greece's largest international airport in Athens bearing his name.
